About Ottawa Safety Council & Board
We are a vibrant, $2.9 million charitable, not-for-profit organization established in 1957. The current OCS programs include our flagship Adult Crossing Guard program (encompassing 198 intersections throughout Ottawa); our history-rich and first class motorcycle training program; providing leaders for the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority (OSTA) walking school bus program; our Best Fit Car Seat program; our children’s Bike Rodeo program; and more. Every day, our dedicated staff and volunteers encourage folks to make smart choices about their individual safety and the safety of their families.
The Board’s role is to provide governance and guidance as the OSC builds and maintains the trust of the community in all our programs. We strive to fulfill the organization’s mission statement, be prudent and ethical in all our activities, remain transparent and accountable to the organization and its members, develop a strategic plan and provide guidance in its execution, act with integrity in the best interests of the organization, and fulfill our duties of diligence, loyalty, and management. Our meetings focus on planning, policy-making, and assessing the organization’s progress in its fulfillment of the mission statement. We are growing – this is an excellent opportunity for you to participate in making a difference in your community. Our success means a safer Ottawa.
The OSC’s Ad-Hoc Committee seeks applicants to join our Board of Directors for the remainder of our 2017-2018 term from January 2018 through May. To complement the skills of our existing members, we need experience in the following areas:
- Risk Management
Your time commitment is from anywhere between 10 to 15 hours per month, depending on current levels of activity. The Board meets on the second Monday of the month from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m., with no meetings scheduled in July, August, October, and February. We also have two retreats yearly – one on a Saturday in January and the other over the second weekend in June so the new board can get to know each other and get up to speed on the OSC’s activities and plans. This June orientation retreat is mandatory. All available positions are elected at each Annual General Meeting for a minimum term of two years. The Board elects its officers.
The deadline for applications for candidacy is December 8, 2017. The successful board candidate will be presented to the Board of Directors at the January 2018 meeting at which time the Board will appoint a new director.
